RV Storage in DFW - Options, Costs and What to Look For
Most DFW neighborhoods don’t let you park an RV in the driveway. HOA rules, city ordinances or just tight driveways mean you need off-site storage. Here’s how to find the right spot without overpaying.
Storage Types
Uncovered Outdoor
Your RV sits in an open lot, exposed to sun, rain, hail and wind. The cheapest option but hardest on your rig.
Cost: $50-100/month
Pros: Affordable, widely available, easy access
Cons: UV damage to roof and seals, hail exposure, temperature extremes
Best for: Newer rigs with good roof coatings, tight budgets
Covered (Roof Only)
A metal roof over the parking spot. Protects from direct sun, rain and hail but sides are open to wind and dust.
Cost: $100-200/month
Pros: Sun and hail protection, reasonable cost
Cons: Sides exposed, dust accumulation, limited availability
Best for: Most RV owners — the best value for protection
Fully Enclosed Indoor
Climate-controlled or non-climate warehouse storage. Maximum protection from everything.
Cost: $200-400/month
Pros: Complete weather protection, security, climate control
Cons: Expensive, limited locations, may have access restrictions
Best for: High-value rigs, classic RVs, long-term storage
What to Look For
Security
- Perimeter fencing (8 ft minimum)
- Electronic gate access with individual codes
- Security cameras covering the lot
- On-site manager or regular patrols
- Well-lit at night
Access
- 24/7 access or at least extended hours (6 AM - 10 PM)
- Wide drive lanes for maneuvering large rigs
- Pull-through spaces (easier than backing in)
- Dump station on-site (convenient for pre-trip prep)
- Water and electric hookups (for battery charging and system checks)
Location
Storage close to your home saves time on trip prep and pickup. But storage 15-20 minutes outside the city is often 30-50% cheaper. Balance convenience with cost.
DFW Storage Areas
North (Denton, McKinney, Frisco area)
More open land means more storage options and lower prices. Uncovered lots run $50-75/month. Growing area with new facilities opening regularly.
East (Mesquite, Terrell, Forney)
Affordable with easy highway access to I-30 and I-20. Good for RVers who head east toward lakes and East Texas camping.
South (Cleburne, Burleson, Mansfield)
Close to Dinosaur Valley and Hill Country access via I-35W. Mid-range pricing with good covered options.
West (Weatherford, Aledo, Hudson Oaks)
Gateway to West Texas trips. Slightly cheaper than central DFW storage.
Prep Before Storage
Short-Term (1-3 months)
- Clean interior (prevent mold and pests)
- Empty the fridge and leave door propped open
- Dump all holding tanks
- Disconnect battery or connect a solar trickle charger
- Close all windows and vents
- Cover tires if outdoors (UV protection)
Long-Term (3+ months)
Everything above, plus:
- Winterize plumbing if storing through cold months
- Remove all food and perishables
- Place moisture absorbers (DampRid) inside
- Inspect roof seals and caulk any cracks
- Inflate tires to max sidewall pressure
- Consider a breathable RV cover for outdoor storage
- Place mouse traps or peppermint oil sachets (rodent deterrent)
Cost-Saving Tips
Pay annually. Most facilities offer 1-2 months free for annual prepayment. On a $150/month covered spot, that saves $150-300/year.
Share a spot. If you and a friend camp on alternating weekends, split a storage spot. Some facilities allow this; ask first.
Off-peak booking. Storage demand peaks in fall when people put rigs away. Negotiate rates in spring when facilities have vacancies.
Check Facebook Marketplace. Private landowners rent RV parking on their property for $30-60/month. Less security but significant savings.
